Savannah is one of those places I never really left, even after I moved away.
I lived there for four years, and it’s where I started my photography career. I still go back a few times a year for weddings and engagement sessions, and every time I do, it feels familiar in a way that’s hard to explain. It’s one of those cities where you don’t really need GPS after a while, you just know where everything is.
A lot of people think of Savannah as just the historic district. The oak trees, Forsyth Park, the squares, the classic streets you see on Pinterest or Instagram. And those places are beautiful, obviously. But what I love most is that I know the city beyond that too. The quieter corners. The side streets. The spots people usually walk past without noticing.
That’s what makes engagement sessions there feel so good to me.

ToggleThere’s a really rare mix in Savannah that you don’t get in most places.
You’ve got the historic downtown, which gives you all the architecture, textures, and soft light bouncing off buildings. Then you’ve got the riverfront, which feels completely different. You’ve got marsh, oak lined parks, hidden courtyards, and then just a short drive out, you’re at the beach.
Tybee Island is about 30 minutes away. If you keep going, you’ve got places like Jekyll Island and Driftwood Beach that feel almost unreal compared to downtown Savannah. Driftwood especially is one of those places that doesn’t really need anything added to it. It just is what it is. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s definitely a top contender for engagement sessions (just bring bug spray).
So depending on what you want your engagement photos to feel like, you can build something really different within the same general area. That’s part of why I love shooting there so much.
Most engagement sessions in Savannah don’t start with anything complicated.
We usually just meet up somewhere easy and recognizable. Forsyth Park is common, and then start walking. I’ll probably ask you a couple of simple things at first just to get you comfortable, but nothing that feels like a production.
Most couples are a little awkward in the beginning. That’s normal. You’re not supposed to instantly feel natural in front of a camera. So we just ease into it. Walk a little. Talk. Stop when something looks good. Keep moving.
It doesn’t stay “awkward” for long, though. After a few minutes, people usually forget about the camera completely and just go back to interacting with each other like they normally would. That’s really all I’m waiting for.

One of the reasons I love Savannah so much for engagement sessions is because it doesn’t require a lot of direction.
The city already has so much built into it visually that we don’t need to overthink locations or try to force anything. The light shifts constantly through the streets and trees. You can stay in one general area and still get a lot of variety without running all over the place.
Even just walking a few blocks can give you completely different backdrops, old brick streets, quiet squares, theatres, shaded walkways, and everything in between.
It also just feels good to be there. Savannah has a really open, welcoming energy. It’s a creative city. SCAD is there, so there are a lot of artists, photographers, and small businesses. People are used to seeing shoots happening around town, so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable or disruptive.
That makes a big difference when you’re trying to relax into a session.

I tend to keep engagement sessions pretty simple in Savannah.
Walking through Forsyth Park is always a go to. It changes throughout the day depending on the light and the season, so it never really feels the same twice.
I also like just moving through downtown without a strict plan. Stopping at coffee shops, grabbing a drink somewhere, sitting down for a minute, then getting up again. Espresso Galleria is one of those easy spots that just fits into a session without trying too hard.
Sometimes couples want something a little more structured, but most of the time it works better when we just move and see what happens.
That’s usually where the best moments come from anyway. Not when everything is planned, but when you’re just existing in between things.

What makes Savannah really special for engagement photos is that it gives you options without making you travel far.
You can start downtown, move through historic streets, end up near the river, and then head to the beach later that day if you want something completely different. Or you can stay in one neighborhood and still get variety without rushing anywhere.
There’s also marshland and wooded areas not far from the city that feel quieter and more removed if that’s more your vibe. So whether you want something more city-focused or something more natural and open, it’s all there.

For me, being a Savannah engagement photographer isn’t about turning the session into something overly planned or overly styled.
It’s more about knowing the city really well, knowing how the light moves through it, and knowing when to step in and when to just let things happen.
I don’t really over direct things. I’ll guide you when I need to, especially at the beginning, but most of the session is just you two being together and me documenting it as it unfolds.
If you’re planning engagement photos in Savannah, GA, and you want something that feels easy, familiar, and not overly produced, I’d love to meet you there and keep it simple. Reach out here and we’ll start planning.
I photograph weddings across Tennessee and beyond, using a mix of digital, film, and super 8 video.
My approach is simple. I create space for you to be fully present, and I document what actually happens. You won’t receive photos that feel copy and paste, but something that reflects your day as it was. If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I care about your actual wedding, not a version of it made for the camera.
If you’re planning something that matters to you, I’d love to connect.
