Documentary-style photography is a major buzzword in the wedding industry right now—but what does it actually mean? Is it all about candid shots? Is it guided prompting? Or is it traditional posing? In truth, it’s none of those things! Documentary photography is all about storytelling—capturing authentic moments as they naturally unfold to create a visual narrative of your special day. In this blog, we dive deep into what exactly documentary style photography is!
Weddings are celebrations between friends and family about two people who fell in love and decided to make an incredible decision. In the age of social media, there’s a lot of pressure to get “the shot”! There is pressure not only for the couple but also for the photographer and the vendors involved. A documentary style photographer doesn’t go into an event thinking about the perfect shot, because the perfect shot is the couple and their loved ones enjoying their celebration. Photos do not come first on a wedding day. At least, in my mind, they shouldn’t!
Feelings, emotions, and time come first. These moments do not have to be staged or look a specific way just for a photo. The lighting doesn’t need to be perfect. The angle doesn’t need to be perfect. When you reflect back on your wedding day and look through images, you want to be overflowed with memories of joy and happiness! Remembering what it felt like in that very moment is more important than thinking, “My photographer or my videographer made me do this very specific fake action for ‘the shot.'”
Take, for example, Sarah & Max’s Day, which was 100% documentary! The moments that were captured were (for the most part) fully unscripted and in the moment. From a photographer’s standpoint, we have to always anticipate moments that will happen. Feel the room, overhear conversations, and pay attention to what people are doing and what’s about to happen. And when we go in with a shot list, we take away from paying attention to what exactly is happening around us. The couple’s main focus was getting to spend time with family and friends. They were certainly focused on that vs. anything else, and it was AMAZING! They didn’t want to “perform” or fake any moments. Everything was fully how it was. No adjusting, no redo’s.
Documentary Style Photography is all about capturing the true essence of the moment. It’s not about the perfect shot but about the perfect memory! By focusing on the story and the emotions of the day, photographers can create a collection of images that truly reflect the joy and excitement of the occasion. So, when you’re planning your big day, remember that the most important thing is to enjoy the moment and let your photographer capture it as it truly is!
